The portrait that outlived the pose
She commissioned a better version of herself. It immediately became difficult to live up to.

Her dark fantasy origin begins with an artist who offered an unusual guarantee: the finished likeness would always show its subject at her most revealing. Isabella heard most attractive. The contract preserved the original wording, patiently waiting for the distinction to become everyone’s problem.
Vanity is an expensive way to hire your own witness.

Chapter 01
The face prepared for history
She arrived at the studio with instructions concerning the shoulders, the light, the jewels, and the expression of effortless kindness. Effortless kindness required seven sittings and frequent corrections. The artist listened, painted, and declined to discuss the old frame leaning behind the easel.
Isabella selected that frame herself. Its dark wood carried a pattern of open eyes, which she considered suitably attentive. The artist explained that it had belonged to a house where portraits served as records rather than decoration. She approved. History, she thought, could use a more attractive record of her. When the studio assistant brought water, Isabella criticized the glass without looking at the person holding it. A faint mark appeared beside the painted mouth. The artist glanced at the frame and asked whether she wished to reconsider. Isabella requested a narrower waist instead.

The unveiling goes exceptionally well
At first the portrait was a triumph. Guests praised its composure and the intelligence of the eyes. Isabella stood beside it accepting compliments as though the artist had merely documented an obvious natural resource. Then a servant dropped a tray, and she snapped at him before recovering her smile.
The portrait kept the first expression. Its painted mouth tightened while the living one returned to graciousness. Several guests noticed. Isabella blamed a trick of the light and moved a lamp. The face in the frame became more irritated. When she praised a rival’s inexpensive necklace, a small sneer appeared. The room grew fascinated. Nobody had paid for this entertainment, which made them unusually reluctant to leave. Isabella ordered the portrait covered. Under the cloth, its outline remained visible, as if the frame considered concealment a temporary clerical error rather than an instruction.

A likeness with bad manners
She returned to the artist demanding repairs. He showed her the contract. The frame preserved the expression attached to the wearer’s least performed response. It could not read a soul or judge a life. It simply caught the face before manners arrived to improve it.
Isabella proposed that the artist paint over the effect. He said the frame would restore it. She proposed destruction. He said the wood was ordinary enough to burn, but the portrait would cease to exist with it. That should have resolved the matter. Instead she hesitated. The beautiful version had been admired by precisely the people she wanted to impress. Destroying it would mean admitting that the likeness could not survive contact with its subject. She took it home, face down, and spent the evening avoiding a painting that was technically doing nothing more aggressive than looking like her.

The experiment with witnesses
For a week Isabella attempted to behave beautifully whenever the frame was uncovered. The effort was exhausting and ineffective. The portrait caught the irritation underneath her restraint. She began noticing how often she expected small inconveniences to become somebody else’s humiliation.
She tried a different experiment: asking the servant about the broken tray instead of rehearsing a pardon. His hand had been injured carrying a trunk she had insisted be moved twice. The conversation supplied information she should already have possessed. Her expression changed before she remembered the portrait. That was the first time the painted face softened without looking artificial. Isabella hated how simple the cause appeared. A grand artistic crisis had led her to the elementary discovery that other people contained experiences. No painting could make that realization less insulting to the person having it so late.

The portrait stays in the hall
Isabella kept the frame where visitors could see it. She said it reminded her to remain sincere, a claim the portrait occasionally answered with a flicker of smugness. Improvement had not removed her appetite for admiration. It had merely given the appetite an unusually candid companion.
Her origin leaves a Xenoverse character who understands presentation, social appetite, and the frightening distance between a polished identity and an unguarded reaction. She can be kind. She can also be cruel with exquisite manners. The frame ensures those possibilities remain in conversation rather than letting one erase evidence of the other.
Guests now watch her portrait when she compliments them. Isabella pretends not to notice. Sometimes she earns the compliment’s reflection. Sometimes the painted eyebrow rises, and a roomful of people receives a tiny, devastating correction. She has become famous for her honesty. The fame is flattering enough to keep the painting busy.
