A raised chin, a pause before answering, the expectation that somebody would move a chair: royalty consisted of habits other people agreed to support. She could reproduce those habits beautifully. Feeding herself between productions was harder.
Her origin in the Toxic Goblin Xenoverse begins with an offer to impersonate a missing provincial ruler for one appearance. The court promised discretion, payment, and no difficult questions. Sable accepted because two of those promises were familiar lies and the third sounded negotiable.
They wanted a puppet with presence. They objected when she found the strings.

Chapter 01
The fitting before the deception
The ruler’s advisers explained that illness had prevented a scheduled address. The crowd needed reassurance. Sable would wave from a balcony, read a short statement, and leave through a private passage. She studied the ruler’s portraits and noticed that nobody looked comfortable beside the subject. That seemed an important detail.
The crown was heavier than its painted version. The costume restricted her breathing. A maid adjusted the collar and quietly advised her not to sign anything. Sable asked whether this was part of the rehearsal. The maid said everything in the palace was a rehearsal for making somebody else responsible. Sable laughed, assuming the remark was theatrical cynicism. She had worked with enough directors to recognize the genre. She had not yet worked with people who could convert it into legislation before lunch.

The balcony becomes an office
The appearance succeeded. Too well. Petitioners cheered, officials relaxed, and the advisers discovered that a ruler who followed instructions was considerably easier to manage than the missing original. They offered Sable another day’s pay. Then another. She acquired private rooms and a growing folder of documents supposedly requiring only a ceremonial mark.
She enjoyed the service before she understood the arrangement. Servants anticipated her needs. Meals appeared. People listened when she spoke slowly. Her acting improved as her suspicion declined. Then she recognized a petitioner from the theatre district, asking relief from a levy Sable had unknowingly endorsed. The woman did not recognize her beneath the costume. She bowed and begged for mercy from an actress whose last unpaid role had involved carrying furniture. Sable could hear the entire joke. Being its beneficiary did not make it less degrading.

A sovereign on borrowed time
She demanded to see the ruler. The advisers said recovery was delicate and suggested that asking questions might delay her payment. Her private passage had acquired a guard. The maid brought a plain coat hidden beneath laundry and explained that the original ruler had fled the province with its reserve funds. The court needed a face to absorb the approaching anger.
Sable tried the crown in the mirror and saw how neatly it framed a scapegoat. She had imagined a deception she could end when the performance concluded. The court had removed the curtain. Escape remained possible, but it would leave her signatures and another woman’s name attached to the damage. For one night she considered taking the money and disappearing. Her hesitation was not pure nobility. She also hated being cast in a role whose ending had been kept from her.

The speech without the approved version
At the next address, Sable removed the crown before speaking. She gave her own name, described the arrangement, and read the levy documents aloud. The crowd’s first reaction was fury directed squarely at her. She had expected some of that. Expectation did not make the sound easier to bear.
She named the advisers and handed the documents to representatives from the affected districts. Guards moved toward the balcony, then stopped when officials below began arguing over whose order applied. Sable used the confusion to leave with the maid, wearing the plain coat. She received neither applause nor the remainder of her pay. Behind her, the court lost the useful fiction that its ruler was quietly recovering. It would have to invent something more expensive. Sable took the crown, not as a claim to power but as collateral. She was still owed money and remained, in several respects, an actress.

Reign is the part she kept
Sable Reign became the name she used afterwards. The title carried just enough grandeur to attract work and just enough scandal to discourage easy questions. She sold the crown’s jewels to pay people harmed by the levy, retaining one small stone whose value she never disclosed.
Her origin produces a Xenoverse character skilled at reading ceremonies, impersonating confidence, and spotting the moment a flattering invitation becomes confinement. She remains tempted by luxury. A room full of people waiting for her answer can still make her forget who arranged the room. Remembering that weakness is part of surviving it.
She returned briefly to the theatre. Cast as a queen, she asked who signed the orders after the final scene. The director accused her of overthinking the role. Sable said that was the trouble with queens: somebody always thought the performance ended before the bill arrived. She requested payment in advance.
