Sally Whitemane entered the forest at the head of a procession designed to be noticed. Scarlet fabric caught the light. Polished ornaments flashed between the trees. The banners were large enough to reassure anyone who confused visibility with authority. This unofficial Warcraft crossover begins with a splendid arrival taking a road that had been moved overnight.

The guide insisted that the path was correct. Sally pointed to a fallen marker. He explained that local landmarks were occasionally unreliable. Behind them, a banner caught in a branch and brought half the procession to an undignified halt. The forest offered no apology.

Prologue — An impressive audience of squirrels

The visit had been announced as a formal inspection of a border settlement. The settlement’s goblin traders had received the news with interest, then sent directions that were accurate in every respect except destination.

Sally expected a public welcome. Instead, she found an abandoned charcoal camp, a cold fire pit and a wooden sign reading WAIT HERE. The guide suggested that the reception party might be delayed.

She looked at the sign. Fresh paint glistened on the final letter. Somewhere beyond the camp, somebody laughed and tried unsuccessfully to turn it into a cough.

Act I — The forest declines to cooperate

The first attempt to leave returned them to the same camp. The second led to a shallow stream and a bridge that had been dismantled neatly enough to suggest professional enthusiasm. The third revealed that the guide had disappeared, leaving behind a hat of remarkably little sentimental value.

Sally ordered the banners lowered. It was a practical decision, although everyone pretended not to notice how much easier moving became afterward. The procession was not equipped for a long walk through broken woodland. It was equipped to look excellent while arriving somewhere else.

At the stream, they found two goblin charcoal burners repairing a cart. The burners admitted knowing the settlement. They declined to explain the road until Sally listened to why the visit had been misdirected.

A previous inspection had taken their winter stores, condemned their bridge and departed without arranging repairs. The new announcement promised another assessment. Nobody in the forest had expected that to improve their position. They had decided to make the assessment difficult to begin.

Sally said that obstructing an official party was a serious matter. One burner pointed at the broken bridge and asked whether leaving it that way had been a lighthearted one.

For several seconds, the forest became very quiet. The procession waited to discover whether its leader would answer the question or merely punish its existence.

Act II — Authority at ankle depth

Sally inspected the bridge. Its supports were rotten, its decking incomplete and its repair materials stacked beneath a tarp on the wrong bank. The original report had identified the danger accurately. It had accomplished nothing useful afterward.

She disliked discovering that a rude man with a broken cart had a defensible point. She disliked the mud more. Neither objection improved the bridge.

The procession carried ropes, tools for its display stands and several strong people who had spent the morning protecting fabric from branches. Sally put them to work beside the charcoal burners. The largest banner pole became a temporary brace. Its owner looked stricken until she asked whether he preferred to carry it home while swimming.

The work stripped the visit of its intended appearance. Scarlet hems darkened with water. Polished fittings acquired scratches. One member of the party dropped a ceremonial ornament into the stream and received no assistance until he stopped describing its importance.

Sally crossed last. Halfway over, the brace shifted. She caught the railing, steadied herself and emerged on the far bank with one thoroughly wet boot. The goblins displayed admirable restraint for almost a full second.

She looked at them, looked at the bridge and began laughing before the incident could become a contest over who was permitted to notice it.

Act III — A smaller procession, a better arrival

They reached the settlement at dusk with the banners rolled and the guide’s abandoned hat tied to a pack. The welcome was cautious. People looked first at the mud, then at the repaired crossing behind them, then at Sally.

She held the inspection in the open square. The charcoal burners attended. So did the people who had lost stores during the previous visit. This time, complaints were written beside the original findings, and proposed repairs were matched with names and dates rather than left as impressive intentions.

Nothing about the meeting was grand. It was long, argumentative and interrupted twice by somebody checking on dinner. Sally discovered that being heard without a procession required more patience and fewer assumptions.

The settlement offered beds for the night. She accepted. The following morning, a child presented her with a tiny painted sign reading THIS WAY. She inspected it solemnly and asked whether its directions were more reliable than the previous edition.

The child said that depended on whether she intended to fix anything else.

Sally left the enormous banners packed. She had arrived expecting the forest to recognize her authority. It had recognized the weight of her luggage, the weakness of the bridge and the difference between a visit and a contribution. The lesson was irritatingly specific, which made it difficult to dismiss.

Sally Whitemane fan art and scarlet authority

The Scarlet Procession and the Wrong Road is original Toxic Goblin fan fiction featuring Sally Whitemane, not an official Warcraft event. Its central contrast is between visible authority and useful action. The comedy comes from ceremonial confidence encountering a landscape that refuses to make special arrangements for it.

The accompanying Warcraft fan-art preview places scarlet regalia against a woodland setting with creature company. It establishes a visual crossover atmosphere without claiming to illustrate this story literally. The character interpretation, the artwork and the invented journey remain unofficial fan creations.

Unofficial Warcraft fan art. Original character rights belong to their respective owners.
