Demon Rose arrived at the reception after the welcome speech and before the host finished lying. The timing would later be described as theatrical by people whose contribution to the evening was hiding behind a curtain. She wore her composure as if it had survived worse rooms. Everyone else wore evidence of substantial expenditure.

This beginning belongs to the Toxic Goblin Xenoverse’s darker character files: a story about reputation, borrowed grandeur, and a woman who discovered how much authority can be extracted from a room full of frightened hypocrites. It begins without a prophecy. A guest list will do.

Respectability is a stain that wealthy people keep insisting is a finish.

Chapter 01

The invitation with the wrong name

The invitation called her Rosa. It had arrived with a wax seal, an elaborate apology, and an unpaid invoice folded underneath. The host had purchased the remains of a ruined exhibition house, including its name, its furnishings, and apparently its habit of treating workers as decorative expenses. He wanted the reopening to look respectable. He had therefore invited everyone who might disagree to arrive by the service entrance.

Rose used the front. A steward searched the list and failed to find her. She pointed to the invoice. He looked relieved: paperwork was something he could obey without thinking. That was the first useful thing she learned about the evening. The second was that the host had signed a document acknowledging every debt attached to his purchase. His solicitor had called it standard language. Standard language was about to develop teeth.

Chapter 02

Beauty lies in decay

Inside, new silk concealed crumbling plaster. The host had left several old portraits on the walls because their damaged faces lent the place what he called history. The people who had painted them were waiting outside to be paid. He praised their commitment to mystery while standing on a carpet bought with their wages.

Rose walked slowly enough to make the staff nervous. She was not inspecting the splendour. She was noticing the repairs: a seam pulled too tight, a pedestal balanced on folded paper, a curtain drawn across a water stain shaped almost exactly like the host’s country estate. Decay had kept a more honest record than the invitation. There was beauty in that honesty, and considerable comedy in the price charged to conceal it. She lifted the curtain. A guest immediately asked whether the stain was part of the collection. The host said yes.

Chapter 03

An introduction nobody wanted

The host recognized her near the damaged portraits. His expression performed three short, unsuccessful occupations: surprise, warmth, and indigestion. He asked whether they had met. Rose waited. Silence was cheaper than testimony and made him supply far more of it.

Eventually he mentioned the old exhibition house. Then he mentioned its regrettable closure. Then, attempting generosity, he offered to buy her a drink. She laid the invoice beside his glass. Around them, conversations softened into the particular quiet produced by people who love scandal but prefer someone else to be caught listening. He said the matter was complicated. Rose asked which number confused him. Someone laughed before discovering that nobody else had permission. The host’s carefully acquired reputation began shedding its expensive outer layer, exposing a surprisingly common little cheat beneath.

Chapter 04

The account on the wall

Rose did not demand a duel or overturn a table. She asked the steward to read the acquisition notice already displayed beside the entrance. He did so with excellent diction. Then she asked him to read the clause about outstanding obligations. His diction deteriorated, but the clause survived.

The workers were admitted through the front door to identify their names on the invoice. Each gave a plain account: carpentry, portrait repair, carrying, cleaning. The reception acquired a programme considerably more interesting than the host’s speech. He offered settlements in private. Rose moved a chair beneath the brightest lamp and invited him to begin there. Payment followed. It was not a triumph of sudden virtue. It was the arithmetic of a man who had discovered that witnesses were more expensive than wages. By midnight, his champagne had become an administrative beverage.

Chapter 05

The woman at the next threshold

Rose left without accepting thanks from the host. Gratitude would have allowed him to pretend he had contributed something. The workers carried their payments out through the main entrance, and the steward quietly stopped directing people according to the quality of their shoes.

The incident did not explain everything about her. It explained why certain rooms would remember her arrival before she supplied a name. In this origin, Demon Rose becomes a presence associated with the bill beneath the invitation: the cost a performance hopes you will overlook. She is composed because panic belongs to the people who need the performance to survive.

Later, when someone stared and announced that they knew her, she had no reason to rescue them from the realization. Recognition was their work. What she chose to do with it was hers. Somewhere behind that person, someone with an expensive reputation would begin checking the doors.
