Michaela bought her sword before she bought a map. The merchant called it a champion’s weapon, which meant it was long, expensive, and inconvenient to return. She carried it across the market with enough ceremony to make three strangers assume a war had been announced.

Her origin in the Xenoverse begins with a familiar ambition: to become the person a frightened village sends for. Unfortunately, she concentrated on looking like that person before learning what the work involved. The village’s first request concerned a missing mill wheel in a ruin with unusually low ceilings.

Destiny should really check the ceiling height.

Chapter 01

The commission without applause

The villagers needed water restored before their stored grain spoiled. Michaela heard that something had taken the wheel and pictured a confrontation worth illustrating. She promised swift action and requested that nobody follow. A miller’s apprentice offered to explain the old channels. Michaela assured him that experience could sometimes inhibit instinct. He looked at her sword and wisely saved his breath.

The entrance lay beyond a broken sluice. There were marks in the mud, loose lengths of rope, and a narrow passage carrying water uphill through a pressure channel. She noticed the marks because they resembled tracks. She ignored the ropes because they resembled work. Before descending she placed her cloak on a rock where it would remain visible from the village. A hero should always be recognizable, she thought. This decision later helped the apprentice find her, proving that even vanity occasionally performs a public service by accident.

Chapter 02

The ruin refuses a duel

Inside, the sword caught on the first corner. Michaela turned sideways. At the second corner she lifted it above her head, struck the ceiling, and showered herself with grit. Somewhere ahead, goblins laughed. She issued a challenge. The echo returned a shortened version that sounded considerably less impressive.

The goblins were using the mill wheel to drive a lifting platform. They had not stolen it out of hatred for the village. It had been available, round, and useful. Michaela charged toward the platform, wedged the sword between two supports, and discovered that leverage works on its owner as readily as anyone else. The platform tilted. She landed in a drainage trough while the weapon remained standing, a magnificent monument to having misunderstood the room. A goblin placed her cloak over the hilt after fetching it from outside. Now the sword looked more heroic than she did.

Chapter 03

The apprentice with the rope

The apprentice arrived carrying a coil of rope and a wooden wedge. He did not comment on the trough. That restraint hurt more than laughter. Michaela explained that she had been assessing the mechanism. He asked whether the assessment required her to remain upside down. She requested the rope.

Once free, she watched him examine the channel. The goblins needed their lift; the village needed its wheel. There was an older wheel half-buried nearby, too heavy for the goblins to raise alone. The problem had acquired a solution without acquiring an enemy. Michaela disliked how small her role appeared until the apprentice asked her to hold a beam while he fixed the rope. It was exhausting, unglamorous work. No part of it could be improved by a speech. For the first time that morning, she became indispensable by doing exactly what someone else asked.

Chapter 04

A victory that stains the hands

They raised the spare wheel, tested the platform, and moved the stolen one back through the channel. The goblins contributed tools of doubtful origin and surprisingly sound manufacture. Michaela contributed strength, then patience after her strength became less reliable. The apprentice contributed the plan. Everyone understood this except her pride, which continued submitting objections long after the meeting had ended.

Retrieving the sword took another hour. Its polished edge had acquired several chips, and the champion’s inscription was partly obscured by mineral sludge. The merchant would have called this character. Michaela called it an expensive reminder. When they returned, the villagers cheered the sight of the wheel. She almost raised the sword, then lowered it and helped guide the wheel into its housing. Flour mattered more than the pose. The apprentice caught her eye and nodded once, offering the first recognition of the day that she had actually earned.

Chapter 05

The champion who asks about doors

Michaela did not abandon the idea of becoming heroic. She abandoned the belief that heroism could be purchased by length. She learned ropes, watercourses, load-bearing beams, and the useful difference between a threat and an inconvenience. Her sword remained part of the equipment, increasingly accompanied by equipment that solved things.

In later dark fantasy adventures, her confidence still outruns her judgment occasionally. That is why the origin matters. She can recognize the sound of her own foolishness scraping a ceiling. When somebody with less impressive clothing offers information, she now listens before deciding how destiny feels about it.

The village eventually asked her to return. This time the trouble was a broken bridge. Michaela brought the apprentice, several wedges, and a shorter blade. Asked whether she expected a monster, she said she expected a bridge. The answer lacked grandeur. It was also the first reason everyone felt reassured.
