Before there was an Attitude Adjustment Program, there was Kandi Kane.
The Kandi Kane Patient Zero origin story connects a club queen’s reputation to the beginning of the Attitude Adjustment Program. Her encounter with King Aleistar gives the institution a personal history. The number 304 belongs to that account, where a name, a label and an administrator’s version of events carry very different power.
Before there was Patient Zero, there was a 21-year-old woman from a trailer park who wanted one thing more than anything else:
to never be poor again.
Kandi watched wealthy people from the outside for most of her childhood. Their cars. Their clothes. Their homes. Their effortless ability to possess things she could only covet.
She didn’t dream about joining that world someday.
She decided she deserved it.
Nobody knows the name she was born with.
Kandi Kane was the name she created for herself.
And Kandi Kane was going places.
Chapter 01
From Trailer Park to Club Queen
Kandi discovered quickly that she possessed several extremely useful weapons.
She was beautiful.
She was charismatic.
She understood men.
And she was frighteningly good at discovering what people wanted hidden.
Kandi entered the nightclub world and climbed.
Then she kept climbing.
She cultivated wealthy customers. She manipulated coworkers. She collected secrets and traded information whenever doing so advanced her position.
Anyone useful became a friend.
Anyone threatening became a target.
Rumors destroyed competitors.
Blackmail controlled customers.
Violence handled problems that charm couldn’t.
On several occasions, Kandi allegedly pulled a knife.
By 21, the girl from the trailer park had effectively become queen of the club.
There was just one problem.
It wasn’t her club.
It belonged to the goblins.
Chapter 02
The Goblin Council Notices the Money
For a while, Kandi’s private kingdom operated underneath everyone’s noses.
She was clever about it.
Then the numbers changed.
Revenue declined.
Good employees disappeared.
Customers stopped returning.
The club remained busy enough to disguise what was happening, but its profitability kept deteriorating.
Eventually the numbers reached the Goblin Council.
The Council didn’t know about Kandi Kane.
It knew something considerably more important:
someone was screwing with goblin money.
So it sent Aleistar to investigate.
Chapter 03
Enter Aleistar
Aleistar arrived expecting accounting problems, theft, incompetent management or some combination of the three.
Instead, nearly every trail eventually led to one woman.
Kandi Kane.
The deeper he dug, the more extraordinary the situation became.
Kandi had essentially hijacked the social hierarchy of a goblin-owned business without its owners realizing it.
And because she had previously operated beneath Aleistar’s notice, she had absolutely no idea who had just walked into her kingdom.
Kandi treated the goblins even worse.
She insulted them.
She refused them service.
She cheated them.
She publicly humiliated them.
Then Kandi Kane committed the mistake that would divide her life into before and after.
She destroyed a sacred goblin totem.
Whatever amusement Aleistar had found in investigating her ended there.
Kandi Kane was going into his experiment.
Chapter 04
The First Attitude Adjustment
There wasn’t yet an official AAP.
There wasn’t a handbook.
There wasn’t a standardized program.
There was Aleistar, goblin knowledge, an exceptionally difficult subject and an idea.
He began experimenting.
Among his tools was something that would eventually become infamous within AAP lore:
Aleistar’s magically altered cigar.
The cigar wasn’t ordinary tobacco.
Goblin magic had changed it.
Exactly what Aleistar put into it—and what supernatural properties the alteration produced—became one of the secrets surrounding his eventual AAP recipe.
But the cigar alone wasn’t the answer.
Aleistar combined it with AAP training, controlled routines, increasingly menial responsibilities, repetition and other techniques he refined as he observed Kandi’s reactions.
The club queen began changing.
At first, slowly.
Then dramatically.
The woman who once wouldn’t clean up her own spilled drink was cleaning tables.
Then floors.
Then VIP booths.
Then bathrooms.
Every stage gave Aleistar more information.
Every reaction changed the next stage.
Without realizing it yet, Aleistar was inventing the Attitude Adjustment Program around Kandi Kane.
And eventually he witnessed the moment that convinced him he’d discovered something special.
Chapter 05
The Toothbrush Moment
Aleistar entered the bathroom expecting another routine inspection.
Kandi was already working.
She had cleaned the obvious surfaces.
But dirt remained in the narrow grout and tiles around the toilet.
Kandi examined it.
Then reached for something that once would have been unthinkable.
Her own toothbrush.
She began scrubbing.
Not reluctantly.
Not while glaring at Aleistar.
Not because somebody was standing over her demanding she continue.
Kandi was enjoying herself.
She carefully worked the toothbrush along the tiles, inspected what she’d cleaned and smiled at the result.
Then she noticed another dirty section.
And eagerly started again.
Aleistar watched.
This was the woman who had once terrorized an entire club.
The woman who pulled knives.
The woman who manipulated wealthy men.
The woman who destroyed coworkers because they threatened her status.
The woman who had climbed from a trailer park to become queen of her tiny kingdom.
Now she was happily using her own toothbrush to clean around a nightclub toilet because getting the tiles perfectly clean pleased her.
Aleistar understood immediately.
He had something.
Not a punishment.
Not an amusing experiment.
A recipe.
Chapter 06
Patient Zero
The Goblin Council had sent Aleistar to recover lost profits.
Instead, Aleistar returned with something potentially far more valuable.
His experiment with Kandi had combined several elements that could now be studied, refined and repeated:
Goblin magic. The altered cigar. AAP training. Repetition. Ritual. Work. Reward. Aleistar’s own methodology.
Kandi had been the experiment.
Now there could be a program.
The Attitude Adjustment Program was born.
And because every experiment needs a first successful subject, Kandi received a new place in goblin history.
AAP PATIENT ZERO
The name Kandi Kane survived.
Barely.
Her designation became:
304.
The transformation is so profound that somebody who knew Kandi before the AAP might assume she’d undergone a lobotomy.
She hadn’t.
That’s what makes Patient Zero important.
Whatever Aleistar discovered worked.
And somewhere inside the AAP, the precise recipe that transformed the most vicious woman in the club into the woman smiling over freshly scrubbed bathroom tiles remains one of King Aleistar’s most closely guarded secrets.
