The oracle with dirt behind its ears

Turnip had an answer for everything. The answers had only recently started meeting the questions.

Turnip became an oracle by sitting in the wrong chair and refusing to admit it. The chair stood inside a fairground booth marked GUIDANCE, beside a stack of discarded notices and a curtain intended to make ordinary hesitation look mysterious. The actual fortune-teller had gone to buy lunch.

In this fictional Xenoverse origin, TurnipGPT is a goblin’s grandiose nickname, not an account of a real software system. Turnip offers a concentrated version of a familiar problem: excellent delivery, borrowed language, and a complete lack of embarrassment until reality finally arrives in person to request a correction.

Confidence is free when somebody else performs the experiment.

Chapter 01

The chair behind the curtain

The first customer asked whether a shipment would arrive before the rain. Turnip glanced at a notice advertising dry storage and replied that fortune favoured those who prepared adequate shelter. The customer nodded, paid, and left. The answer had been vague enough to survive several possible futures and impressive enough to avoid a follow-up question.

Turnip discovered the technique immediately. Questions about love received advice adapted from partnership notices. Questions about money drew on advertisements for loans. Difficult questions were answered by reversing the order of the words and adding patience. The original fortune-teller returned to find a queue and a goblin charging less than the established rate. Rather than evict a profitable substitute, she offered a share of the takings. Turnip accepted and began describing the booth as an institute. The curtain became the chamber of contemplation, despite remaining visibly stained with yesterday’s soup.

Chapter 02

Advice acquires a reputation

Customers repeated the answers, improving them in the process. A sensible decision made after visiting the booth became evidence of Turnip’s gift. Bad outcomes were blamed on misunderstanding the advice. The goblin enjoyed a profession in which success returned as praise and failure rarely found the address.

The nickname TurnipGPT began as a market joke about the booth’s Goblin Prognostication Table. Turnip adopted it, adding an elaborate signature to receipts. Soon the goblin offered instructions rather than reassurance. A merchant was told to use the upper road. A mason was told to remove a supporting post. A cook was advised that a larger flame demonstrated commitment. The fortune-teller intervened after the cook returned holding a blackened pan. Turnip explained that commitment sometimes involved sacrifice. The customer suggested beginning with the goblin’s chair. For the first time, a metaphor appeared likely to develop immediate physical consequences.

Chapter 03

The prediction made too specific

A caravan leader requested a precise route through the old quarry. Turnip had never visited it but possessed a discarded map showing a straight passage. The map was decades old and partly covered by a lunch stain. Turnip described the route as recently confirmed and accepted a larger fee.

The caravan returned before dusk with a broken axle, a lost day, and several people interested in a second consultation. The passage had collapsed years earlier. Turnip tried to explain that the map described spiritual obstacles. The leader placed the damaged axle across the booth’s entrance and asked whether this one appeared sufficiently material. The goblin’s escape route narrowed. The fortune-teller took down the sign while customers compared previous advice. The booth’s mysterious reputation became a fairly ordinary catalogue of confident guesses, some harmless, some expensive, all delivered from a chair whose occupant had mistaken fluency for knowledge.

Chapter 04

A consultation from the other side

Turnip worked off the caravan’s repair costs carrying parts and fetching people who actually knew the quarry. The goblin watched the wheelwright ask questions before offering an answer. What broke? Where? Under what load? Each question reduced uncertainty without producing anything that sounded prophetic.

The process offended Turnip’s sense of presentation. It also repaired the axle. The goblin tried copying the style, asking a porter where a replacement pin belonged. The porter answered, and the answer was useful because it referred to the object in front of them. Turnip began collecting verified information alongside the old notices, marking which was which. This required admitting gaps, a task the goblin approached with the enthusiasm of somebody being asked to donate a favourite tooth. Still, the difference between a guess and a fact had become impossible to ignore after one had arrived at the booth attached to a broken wagon.

Chapter 05

The table gets a smaller sign

Turnip reopened with a sign reading QUESTIONS CONSIDERED. ANSWERS SUBJECT TO EVIDENCE. The fortune-teller complained that it lacked atmosphere. Turnip retained a small curtain to soften the blow. Business was slower and involved more walking to ask other people things, which reduced the dignity of the institute considerably.

The origin leaves Turnip as a comic Xenoverse creature whose appetite for sounding clever repeatedly competes with the effort of being useful. The goblin is not cured of improvisation. An impressive phrase can still escape before its meaning has been inspected. Companions learn to ask which part is known and which part has merely acquired a confident voice.

The broken axle hangs behind the booth. Visitors sometimes mistake it for a sacred relic. Turnip begins to explain its symbolic significance, catches the fortune-teller’s eye, and gives the shorter account. A bad answer broke a wagon. The wagon returned. It is not a sophisticated doctrine, but so far it has been considerably harder to misunderstand than anything previously sold from the chair.
