Vexxy’s first professional reference described her as disruptive, unreliable, and difficult to dismiss without witnesses. She kept it. Most people require years to obtain a document that accurately summarizes their strengths. She had managed before receiving a second pay packet.

Her Xenoverse origin begins in a town with six warning bells and one approved version of events. The bells announced fires, floods, missing livestock, visiting dignitaries, curfews, and everything the council could not explain. The last bell rang most frequently. Vexxy was employed to maintain it, an arrangement history would struggle to improve upon.

A warning bell is only embarrassing when it tells the truth.

Chapter 01

A small job beneath important people

The bell tower caretaker had retired by falling asleep during a council address and refusing to apologize afterwards. His replacement needed strong hands, a tolerance for dust, and the ability to remain invisible while important people spoke. Vexxy possessed two of those qualifications. The council assumed the third could be deducted from her wages.

She learned the tower’s mechanisms quickly. Each bell had its own rope, each rope its own label, and every label had been corrected by someone who had never climbed the stairs. Beneath the floorboards she found a ledger of false alarms. Flood warnings covered missing funds. Fire warnings interrupted complaints. The dignitary bell had been used twice to distract from a councillor stuck in a gate. The tower was not protecting the town from disasters. It was distributing blame on a schedule.

Chapter 02

The inspection nobody rehearsed

The annual inspection brought the council upstairs in ceremonial coats. Vexxy had cleaned the stairs, oiled the bearings, and relabelled the ropes according to what they actually did. The mayor found the phrase Unexplained Expenses beneath the flood bell and asked whether it was a joke. She said it was maintenance.

They demanded the proper labels. She produced the ledger and asked which set they meant. The inspector, who had travelled a long way and wanted something to inspect, began reading. The mayor attempted to speak over him. Unfortunately, Vexxy had spent the morning improving the tower’s acoustics. His explanation travelled cleanly through the open shutters. Below, the market discovered that its missing bridge fund had apparently become a new carriage. Even the horses looked briefly implicated. The council instructed Vexxy to close the shutters. She requested a written work order.

Chapter 03

Six bells, one very small man

The mayor seized the dignitary rope to drown out the discussion. Vexxy had not moved it. She had repaired its neglected linkage, which meant the mechanism now performed the full ceremonial sequence rather than one dignified chime. All six bells rang, followed by a shower of faded welcome ribbons saved from an earlier administration.

The market assembled. The inspector asked for receipts. A councillor attempted to descend through the ribbons and emerged wearing a banner proclaiming SERVICE ABOVE SELF. It was the most damaging piece of evidence produced that afternoon. Vexxy remained beside the bearings, holding an oil can and wearing the irritating expression of someone whose work had finally met its specification. Asked why she had not warned them, she pointed out that they were standing in a warning tower. There were limits to how literally a job could be performed.

Chapter 04

Unemployable in all the right places

They dismissed her for causing a disturbance. She asked whether that meant the alarms were working. Her last wages arrived in a purse light enough to suggest continuing institutional illness. She counted the coins in front of the inspector and returned the purse with a note saying the missing amount could be found under Flood Prevention.

The town offered her other jobs. Some people wanted revenge; others wanted their doors to stop sticking. She preferred the doors. Revenge clients were prone to speeches, whereas a hinge was either crooked or it was not. But the inspection had changed her understanding of mischief. A nuisance could expose a structure that polite argument merely decorated. She did not need to be stronger than an authority. She needed to identify the rope it could not resist pulling, then make certain the mechanism worked exactly as advertised.

Chapter 05

Where trouble becomes a calling

By the time stories of Vexxy reached the wider Xenoverse, the bell incident had grown horns, explosions, and three additional mayors. She corrected none of those details unless someone offered payment. The useful part was already travelling: people who hired her should be unusually clear about what they wanted kept quiet.

She became a specialist in the narrow distance between a rule’s purpose and its actual effect. Her targets tended to be people who confused obedience with competence. Their humiliations tended to be self-administered, which saved her both effort and moral paperwork.

Vexxy’s dark fantasy beginning contains no grand fall from innocence. She started beneath a tower full of bad machinery, repaired it, and discovered that the truth made an excellent racket. The council eventually installed a smaller bell. It did nothing to make them less audible.
