The soldiers called Virelle the Maiden of Yield after she lowered a banner at the river crossing. They meant the name to follow her like a stain. In that respect, they were successful. Their mistake was assuming a stain could not also identify the people who had spilled something.

This Xenoverse origin begins with a surrender witnessed by an entire town. There was no secret victory concealed inside the first decision. Virelle was frightened, outnumbered, and painfully aware that everyone expected courage to resemble a gesture. She chose a different gesture and paid for it in public.

You may have the bridge. You will find ownership a very demanding hobby.

Chapter 01

The bridge with too many promises

The crossing belonged to a town that had promised resistance without purchasing supplies. Its councillors spoke of honour from a meeting room safely uphill. At the bridge, Virelle counted twelve defenders, six useful weapons, and several people who had never spent a night outside. Across the river, an armed company waited with enough provisions to make patience easy.

The council ordered her to hold until reinforcements arrived. Nobody could say who had requested them. A runner returned with a sealed message congratulating the defenders on their resolve. There was no food inside. Virelle read it twice, looking for an instruction more practical than dying attractively. By evening the river was rising and two defenders were shaking from cold. Their youngest volunteer asked whether the councillors would come down to help. Virelle said she did not know. It was her first honest statement that day, and everyone looked worse after hearing it.

Chapter 02

The banner goes down

She crossed alone to negotiate safe passage for the defenders and civilians. The company’s commander demanded a public surrender. He wanted the bridge intact, the town obedient, and a story that would discourage resistance at the next crossing. Virelle had no position from which to demand elegance.

She lowered the banner while the council watched from the hill. The commander announced that the Maiden of Yield had delivered his prize. His soldiers laughed. Some townspeople did too, relieved to have a person onto whom they could unload the fear they had shared. Virelle walked past them with the banner folded under her arm. She did not turn the insult into a clever answer. She had no answer ready. The humiliation arrived whole, without a useful lesson attached, and she spent that night hearing it repeated outside the room where the former defenders had finally been allowed to sleep.

Chapter 03

A victory with a maintenance schedule

The commander took possession at dawn. By noon he wanted someone to explain the sluice gates, the rotten pilings, and the side channel that became dangerous after rain. Virelle had spent years helping the bridge keeper. She knew the crossing’s habits. The commander had conquered a shape on a map and expected the shape to remain cooperative.

She supplied accurate answers to the questions he asked. He asked very few, preferring orders. The river rose. Wagons backed up behind a gate his men had closed for security. The side channel filled. He demanded labour from the town and discovered that people who had been ordered to surrender were unusually literal about yielding responsibility. Virelle organized repairs when civilians were at risk, but she no longer concealed the work beneath speeches. Every request carried the commander’s name. Every delay became his decision. The bridge was teaching him the intimate and exhausting difference between possession and competence.

Chapter 04

Terms written in rising water

On the fourth night, a loaded wagon broke through a weakened approach. Nobody drowned, but the company lost supplies and blocked its own retreat. The commander summoned Virelle privately. She brought two witnesses and the bridge keeper. His expression suggested that witnesses were a personal insult.

They agreed to reopen the old channel, recover the wagon, and establish a repair crew. In return, the company would leave the town’s food stores alone and pay for the materials it had damaged. The commander called these concessions temporary. Virelle wrote down the word and asked how long temporary lasted. He had named her for giving way; now he needed her to refuse vague language. The repair succeeded by morning. The company remained stronger than the town, and the town remained vulnerable. What changed was that strength had acquired obligations somebody could count. It was an incomplete victory, which made it considerably more useful than the council’s imaginary complete one.

Chapter 05

The name remains in circulation

Virelle never recovered the reputation she had before the crossing. Some people continued to call her a coward. Others used Maiden of Yield with a respect they would have struggled to explain aloud. She learned to recognize both tones without asking either group to settle the matter for her.

In the Toxic Goblin Xenoverse, her origin leaves her skilled at retreat, negotiation, and making a stronger opponent live with the consequences of winning. Those skills are not glamorous. They also do not erase the night she lowered the banner. She remembers the laughter, including the laughter of people whose lives she had helped preserve.

Years later, the commander sent someone to ask about another troublesome crossing. The messenger began with the nickname, intending courtesy and achieving something less. Virelle handed him a list of rates. The first line covered consultation. The second covered public gratitude. That one was expensive. She had learned what people were willing to pay to avoid acknowledging a debt.
