Calling Goblin Girl a decoy does not mean she stands still while goblins run past. Her job is to shape what a room notices, what it dismisses, and how long it takes people to connect several small abnormalities into one coordinated event.
She is most effective before anyone knows an operation exists. Once the alarm is obvious, the clan has other specialists. Goblin Girl owns the earlier moment, when curiosity can still be steered and suspicion still needs permission.
Phase 01
Enter through the ordinary door
The first advantage is simple: Goblin Girl can use entrances designed for humans. She can book the room, ask the question, carry the case, wait in the lobby, or cross the public floor without turning the entire environment into a response team.
That access lets her map the human layer of a location while the clan studies everything beneath, behind, and between it.
Phase 02
Become the explanation
When something odd happens, people look for a cause they already understand. Goblin Girl gives them one. A dropped bag, a difficult question, a camera pointed the wrong way, an argument at the desk—each can become the story that absorbs attention while goblin activity remains separate in the observer’s mind.
The technique works because the explanation does not need to be perfect. It only needs to arrive before the truth.
Field noteAttention is not removed. It is assigned.
Phase 03
Hold the frame without looking trapped in it
A poor decoy looks desperate to be watched. Goblin Girl gives people reasons to keep watching without making that desire visible. She may be conspicuous, but she remains believable: the memorable guest, the irritated customer, the creator filming a segment, or the lone traveller asking for help.
Meanwhile, the goblins exploit the unobserved edges. Their movement can be ridiculous, but it does not need to be invisible. It only needs to happen where nobody important is looking.
Phase 04
Leave before the stories merge
The decoy role ends when witnesses begin comparing experiences. A service worker mentions the maintenance door. A guest reports movement under a cart. Someone remembers that Goblin Girl looked toward the corridor before the noise began.
Her exit is therefore part of the operation, not an epilogue. The best escape looks less like a chase than a person deciding the inconvenience is no longer worth her time.
Operational limit
Human camouflage is powerful because it is fragile
Goblin Girl cannot repeat the same cover forever. Recognition accumulates. Every published sighting makes her more valuable as a legend and less useful as an unknown face.
That pressure drives the character forward. The clan must invent stranger plans as the world learns to recognize the woman who always seems to be present just before the goblins are discovered.
